For this movie poster my process was aiming to have an emphasis on some of the major plot or element highlighted from the movie that would spark a curiosity to investigate and perhaps watch the movie. I wanted a strong emphasis on having the main character Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) be the focal point, due to the movie really being about him as a character.
Originally I wanted Daniel to be more of the focal point and wanted close ups of his face.
In the thumbnails i wanted to make sure I was hitting some key elements. Ultimately I decided to go with one of the most iconic scenes from the movie. I wanted it to be seen as a news article that followed after the events that conspire from that specific scene. So that's what led to me from moving away from the initial thumbnails I had drawn out.
After a critique from fellow Colleagues some of the elements they suggested was creating a more dynamic texture to some of the poster to give it a stronger emphasis on the type of elements to expect from the movie. In the movie the events take place happen to be in the harsh environment of the desert. Wanting to relate to kind of feeling and being inspired from a 1900's Newspaper headlines ultimately led me to the final outcome of the movie poster.
